Hannah Wisdom Textiles - Devon, Dorset & Cornwall Designs
All of Hannah's designs were originally created by sewing onto old sea charts, and they feature a range of coastal locations, lighthouses, seabirds and sea life.
Designed in Devon and made in England.
Coasters are 10cm square with rounded corners. They are available in either the original tough laminate coating or a melamine finish, and both have a FSC hardboard base with a cork back. Melamine coasters are a little more glossy.
Cards are professionally printed, plain inside and individually wrapped in a biodegradable eco wrap. With a white envelope. Approx 13cm square.
Hannah says about her designs
Jurassic Coast - The stretch of England's south coast to the east of my home in Plymouth is known as the 'Jurassic Coast' and I have long been fascinated by the fossils found here. When I was asked to come up with a dinosaur design it was the obvious choice to locate it in Lyme Bay. 'Jurassic coast' was created by sewing recycled fabrics onto a 1991 Admiralty sea chart of the English Channel. It shows a plesiosaur swimming in Lyme Bay, with some ichthyosaurs and ammonites.
Owl & Pussycat Teignmouth, Devon - The original of this design was created as a wedding present, for a couple who enjoy the stretch of coast near Teignmouth, and it has quickly become a favourite of many of my customers. This design shows Edward Lear's Owl and the Pussycat sailing off the coast of East Devon. The original was created by sewing onto a 2002 edition of a discarded Admiralty sea chart of Berry Head to the Bill of Portland. The chart shows Torbay, Torquay, Teignmouth, Exmouth.
Octopus at Mevagissey - This cheerful purple octopus was created by sewing recycled fabrics onto a 1984 Admiralty sea chart of Falmouth to Plymouth.
Lifeboat - This design shows the Plymouth lifeboat off Plymouth Sound. The chart includes the Whitsand Bay around to Portwrinkle, Rame head, Kingsand and Cawsand, Plymouth and the east side of the Sound around to Wembury Bay.
Studland Bay Seahorses - Studland Bay is one of the most important sites for spiny seahorses in the UK, and the area is now a marine conservation zone in order to protect them and their fragile ecosystem.
Coast Path - This design features a couple walking the South West Coat Path. The stretch of coast shown is from Newquay to Padstow, which encompasses Bedruthan Steps and Mawgan Porth.
Hannah says - My original textile artworks are created in my Plymouth, Devon studio, using rescued and recycled fabrics sewn onto old discarded admiralty charts. My works show wildlife, history and culture, and the charts add context, providing an immediate linkage to the environment of the subject. The charts bring their own history to the piece, and I love how their scars and blemishes add an extra layer of interest to the work.
