Discover the Magic of Polymer Clay with Sculpt Happy Studio!

Whilst it’s suggested some experience with polymer clay may be of benefit, this class is accessible to beginners

Join Sara for an enchanting intermediate-level workshop where you'll explore polymer clay in greater depth. You'll work on a larger scale to create a beautiful and enchanting bird relief with a magical, antique touch. This amazing ‘bake at home’ clay material doesn’t require specialist equipment like a kiln and can often be sculpted with household items. Polymer clay is incredibly flexible and adaptable, and this project will allow you to unleash your creativity, enhancing your skills and techniques along the way.

In this bird themed workshop, you'll advance your polymer clay skills to create your unique low relief bird piece, selecting from a variety of garden bird templates and using several textures, to create a ‘polymer clay appliqué’ style piece. Your creation will be individual to you, and an artistic impression of a bird, using colours and textures you love.

When you book place, you'll need to choose which bird you would like to sculpt so that Sara can ensure you’re provided with the correct colourway and proportion of clay.

Dive into this enjoyable and nurturing class, where you'll master essential techniques and craft a beautiful, unique bird relief.

Skills you will learn include:

  • Conditioning (softening) Clay: Prepare your clay for seamless sculpting.

  • Slab Rolling: Create smooth, even surfaces with ease.

  • Cutting and Shape Forming: Craft precise shapes and forms using card templates and cutters to build your design.

  • Building an Image: Learn how to join 2 clay parts together and how to layer 2D shapes to compose and build your bird design.

  • Adding Texture: Experiment with various tools to enhance your creations.

  • Applying Pigment: Add stunning colours and effects to your pieces by using Mica powder and/or pastels.

  • Curing (baking) Clay: Learn the process to harden and set your artwork.

  • Finishing and Refining: Give your piece further dimension by antiquing the surface using acrylic paint, to give your piece a magical, enchanted feel.

  • Embellishing with Decorative Elements: Learn how to incorporate a glass cabochon with foils and add other decorative touches to add elegance and dimension to your piece.

Your completed bird relief can become a charming cover for a sketchbook or diary/journal, framed and hung as a captivating wall art piece, or used to decorate a trinket / jewellery box if you wish.

Whether you're looking to create stunning wall art, intricate sculptures, or beautiful home décor, my classes offer a wide range of skills and beautiful projects where you'll achieve amazing results. I will guide you through every step, ensuring that whatever your level of ability, you'll create something you love.

This intermediate workshop will elevate your creativity and leave you amazed by what you can achieve. Spaces are limited, so secure your spot today and continue your journey with polymer clay!

All tools and materials are included in the workshop price, including embellishments such as glass cabochons and foils. Frames, books, boxes etc. for which the piece could be mounted would need to be provided by participants. Sketchbooks are available on the day for purchase, for an additional cost, should you choose.

Please understand there may be some clay colour variation on the day of the class.

Tea, coffee, and refreshments are provided.

The class is aimed at adults. Children from age 14 are also welcome if accompanied by a paying adult.

Sara is happy to run her sessions with 4 people or more. If less than 4 places are booked,  we will cancel the session. If this happens, we'll offer the people who have booked the class a place on an alternative day, a credit for another workshop or a full refund, whichever they prefer.

About Sara

Sara holds a BA with Honours in Design Led Craft, specializing in Ceramics and Silversmithing, and a City & Guilds qualification in Jewellery, bringing over 20 years of art teaching experience. She has taught at secondary and primary levels, including with special needs students, and has developed extensive teaching and leadership skills.

Her love for sculpting began at age eight, and she embraced polymer clay for its versatility and endless possibilities. At college, she specialized in hand building and clay inflation techniques, working mainly with porcelain and stoneware. She discovered precious silver clay in 2016, combining her passions for clay and silver to create nature-inspired, small-scale sculptural pieces often transformed into fine silver jewellery.

Living near Axminster in East Devon, Sara draws inspiration from the local flora and fauna. Her miniature pieces depict the abundance of wildlife, and include beautiful wearable pieces and expressive, decorative wall art. She founded Sculpt Happy Studio to reflect the joy and range of her work in polymer clay, silver clay, and ceramics, and aims to bring joy, creativity, and community through her artwork, jewellery, and classes.
