The Rise and Rise of Crochet

Crochet is having a real moment. Not just with the older generation who’ve always loved it. Young people are picking up their hooks in droves, and it’s turning into one of the most popular crafts around.

A Quick Look Back

Crochet has been around for centuries, though its exact origins are a bit unclear. Some say it started in the Middle East, others trace it to 19th century Europe. What we do know is that by the Victorian era, it was a common pastime and often used to make lace and decorative household items. It’s been a much-loved craft ever since – practical, creative, and relaxing.

Why the Boom?

Over the last few years, crochet has come back in a big way. During lockdown, many people turned to crafts for something calming and hands-on. Crochet was perfect. It’s easy to learn, doesn’t require lots of equipment, and, even as a beginners, you can make something beautiful.

Now, it’s not just a quiet hobby, it’s trendy. Social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram are full of young makers showing off their colourful cardigans, cute crocheted soft toys and stylish accessories. Celebrities being seen wearing crochet outfits and fashion brands picking up on the trend have also helped its popularity.

What’s Behind the Appeal?

There’s something lovely about the slow, mindful nature of crochet. It’s a break from screens, a way to unwind. And, as a bonus, you end up with something unique and useful or beautiful. For younger crafters, it’s also a way to express their style, get creative, and perhaps even build a small business selling handmade items.

A Craft for Everyone

Crochet is no longer seen as an old-fashioned pastime – it’s cool, creative, and here to stay. Whether you’re making a granny square blanket, a funky bucket hat, or a delicate piece of jewellery, there’s a place in the crochet world for everyone.

At Coastal Craft Collective in Seaton, we’ve experienced the growing interest in crochet. We run regular Beginners' Crochet Classes, ideal for complete beginners, rusty returners or those with a little experience who want to learn more. Once you've mastered the basics, our Tuesday morning Crochet & Knitting Club and Sunday morning Crochet & Coffee sessions are great ways to fine tune your skills while enjoying the company of other crafters.

Increasingly we're getting people wanting to learn to crochet so they can then teach their children or grandchildren. It's a wonderful skill to share across generations, and a great family activity to enjoy together.

Whether you're just starting out or picking it up again after years away, crochet is a creative, rewarding hobby that's easier to get into than ever. There’s no better time to give it a go!
