The Japanese Sashiko means ‘little stabs’ or as we know it ‘running stitch’.
The Japanese used it as a simple stitch to quilt several layers of loosely woven fabric for strength and warmth.
‘With modern Sashiko you transpose traditional Japanese designs onto indigo dyed fabric and sew with light coloured thick cotton thread. Equally you can use dark thread on light coloured fabric.’
It looks great on denim too! With thick denim fabric you don’t have to use wadding or batting as the denim is robust enough to maintain the lines of stitching as it is less likely to gather.
The kit contains:
35cm (14”) x 135cm cotton fabric pre drawn with five sashiko designs
35cm x 35cm wadding/batting
35cm x 35cm cotton backing
1 x white sashiko thread 20m
